Here’s an unfinished John Talabot demo the Spanish producer is handing out for free. A reverberating bassline sits beneath chiming percussion. It’s brazen Balearic, summery feel is reminiscent of his early productions like ‘Sunshine’ or ‘Afrika’.

The vocals are sweetly soulful (or gratingly sickly depending on where you stand), but it’s the chugging, hollowed-out percussion that really grabs you. CTEPEO ’57 – The Missouri Breaks EP

CTEPEO ’57′s debut EP dropped on Tartelet Records at the end of last year to mixed reviews. Stuffed full of brittle 808 drums and cosmic sonics that included everything from white noise to tape hiss, it was finely produced, albeit off-kilter house music. But, thanks to the mish-mash of lo-fi sounds, there was something indeterminable about each track – it was most effective when it stuck to a sturdy beat as opposed to experimental electronics.

This freebie is much of the same – certain elements are really fantastic, but they are washed away by downbeat atmospherics during the mid-section. It starts with a wonderful clattering metallic 808 intro and a hint of exotic percussion, before a fuzzy, faintly melodic breakdown enters, before picking up again in the second half.

Cottam – Feelin’ No Love (Unmastered Demo)

Cottam throws out another unmastered demo: a typically long-slung house chugger fitted with steel-tipped tropical percussion and distorted synths. The second half takes a more menacing turn as a deep, ominous throb of bass threatens to break through. Another rough-edged percussive groove from the Preston DJ.

Palms Trax – I Wanna

Palms Trax used to produce ominous bass tracks under his Drop/Dead alias. Last year he arrived on the house scene with a bit of a bang. His sturdy drum machines turned heads thanks to a brittle, snappy quality which offered real bite. ‘I Wanna’ is a typically raw piece of drum work filled with cosmic synths and flourishes of tropical percussion. Highly recommended.
