Recent years have seen Four Tet gravitate towards more traditional house and techno structures, eschewing his jazz and experimental roots. And on ‘For These Times’ (taken from Nonplus Records’ Think and Change comp) Four Tet lays down another resolutely 4×4 piece.
It’s a peak-time bomb that drives and drives, fueled by a pulsing bassline, spitfire percussive shards and a grizzled vocal snippet. Craggy tribal snare-rolls add to the outright urgency and momentum of the thing, whilst, in typical Four Tet style, a minute interlude goes off-piste with some frenzied staccato drums.
With this determined and deliberate club cut, Four Tet again proves that he’s a dab hand at the floor-friendlier stuff as well as the more abstract shades of electronic music.
