The word ‘genius’ is thrown about a little too liberally in today’s electronic music scene, but I think it is fair to say Maurice Fulton has earnt such lofty praise. And here he delivers what might be one of the best disco remixes of the year so far. Rich and ever so slightly off-kilter, the Baltimore artist’s cut of Rhye’s ‘Fall’ is, simply put, spellbinding disco.
Nevertheless, it is a more straight-laced approach than we are used to from an artist whose intriguing output is almost always strange. A big, rounded electro-funk synth struts through the first half with a gleeful sense of retro, whilst the second half usurps the gurgling synth with twanging disco reverb and a keener conga-led groove.
The original from Rhye, an up-and-coming LA soul band who’ve just put out a full-length album, is a sublime serenade, all twinkling strings and sweet, sumptuous vocals. Heartfelt indie at its very best.
