By the time you’ve pressed play on the first track of ∆ ∆’s Skyway EP it’s already too late… you’ve seen those geometric shapes and prepared yourself for some sort of self-important witch/glitch post-blog-house indietronica. Dimitri Dimas should however be forgiven for the pretentious-looking moniker ∆ ∆, it is after all his initials D. D. in his native Greek alphabet (pronounced delta delta).
It’s a welcome relief, then, when the soft kick-drum, distorted strings and warpy “shhh” enter on ‘The Cleansing’, progressing into delicate layers of stripped-down house that go on to permeate the rest of the EP. ‘Coconut girls’ samples bright chunky chords with a jittery hi-hat, ‘Skyway’ layers rolling bongos and tribal flutes, whilst standout track “You” is classic floor-friendly vocal house that manages to sound fresh and stimulating.
This is an unrefined exploration of music from a producer informed by the likes of Autechre and Aphex Twin (and most probably the more current Nathan Fake and Daphni), but doesn’t waiver from a typical house structure and pace. Skyway is a fresh and interesting debut, sounding both naïve and accomplished in its production.
