2008 Round-up – Part I

Happy New Year!

I want to thank all those who’ve consistently read my blog, written comments (good or bad) and particularly those who’ve helped spread the word of Pelski. Without your kind feedback the blog would have folded long ago.

So…it’s 2009 – a time for Pelski to look back on the good, the bad and the downright ugly of 2008…

2008 saw plenty of change in terms of dance music genres. Dance music took a house-ier form this year – with fidget, disco-house, glitch and vocal house pumped out from the likes of Institubes, Cheap Thrills and Dubsided. Meanwhile the new Mad Decent and Fool’s Gold labels focused on hip-hop infused beats and crunky fun. This year we also saw an obsession with big, twisted, thrumming basslines (think Tiga’s ‘Mind Dimension’, Fake Blood’s ‘Mars’ or ZZT’s ‘The Worm’).

Underplayed tunes:

The Yank – We Can’t Be Stopped

If there was any justice in this world The Yank would have blown up this year.

The Black Ghosts – Let’s Get Physical

Why was this not on the album?

Moby – I Love To Move In Here (popof remix)

Humming tech-house with a destructive bassline

Digikid-84 – B.Boy Underground

Addictive, glitchy disco-house.

Style Of Eye – The Prophet

Distinctive, buzzing tech-house. We should’ve heard this everywhere this summer.

Restless (Fake Blood Remix)

Fake Blood was inescapable. Tonnes of brilliant, hammering remixes intent on ripping up the dancefloor. My personal fave didn’t receive its deserved play time.

Tiga & Zyntherius – Sunglasses At Night (D.I.M. Remix)

This re-issue spawned tonnes of remixes. Yet D.I.M’s criminally underated, rumbling, techy remix was low-key but brilliantly constructed.

Overplayed tunes:

Fake Blood – Mars

Awesome tune. But enough’s enough.

MGMT – Kids (Soulwax Remix)

Another brilliant Soulwax remix, but I can barely remember a time when DJ sets were Kids-less.

Crookers – Love To Edit

A huge drop into the biggest bassline imaginable…that only got boring after hearing it in 3 tents in a row at Gatecrasher S.S.

The Count & Sinden – Beeper

I think people have finally stopped playing (and remixing) this one (and have at last learnt to stop reaching for their phones every time they hear the ringing)

Proxy – Raven

Decoy and Dance In The Dark are bigger, better and dirtier. Yes they are.

SebastiAn – Dog/Motor

Um… apparently I just don’t ‘get’ it. (But merely recording a revved up motor is surely pushing it).

Kid Cudi – Day ‘n’ Night (Crookers Remix)

This has been added last minute due to popular demand. You’re absolutely right, I don’t know how I forgot this one, maybe I hadn’t heard it for a couple of hours…

Good year for…

Fake Blood – consistently crafting perfect dancefloor bangers by fusing weighty, rasping basslines with bmore and hefty drums.

Crookers – the blogs went mad. And Crookers got famous very quickly.

Soulwax - edging yet closer and closer to world domination, what with an acclaimed DVD and that near-flawless discography

Fidget house – no more scorning the silly name, it’s officially here…

Mad Decent – Diplo’s record label released tunes by Crookers, Boy 8-bit, DJ Sega, South Rakkas Crew, Bonde Do Role

Bmore – Detroit, Baltimore and the rest are fed-up with it. Over here we’re only just getting started….(and it’s even crossing into the mainstream: Paper Planes, anyone?)

Herve – Joshua Harvey’s been a busy boy, what with his suberb track output and his new label Cheap Thrills

Disco-house – 2008′s huge focus on 90′s sounding house – pulling in elements from disco, modern glitch, vocal house and ravey build ups. Surkin takes the biscuit.

Dubstep – 2008 saw dubstep get alot dirtier

Trouble & Bass – Luca Venezia (Drop The Lime) and his crew continue to push things forward

Boy 8-bit – one of the most consistent artists of the year. Shame Pelski managed to piss him off at the beginning with a cheap dig at his haircut…

Bassline – bassline, speed garage and 2-step saw a revival

Machines Don’t Care – an almighty ‘who’s who’ of UK electro-house teamed up. A bloggers wet dream.

Neon wayfarer sunglasses – you bump into things in clubs for two reasons: you’re too mashed or you’re wearing sunglasses. Take ‘em off dammit.

A-trak – proved he’s not just Kanye West’s DJ, but a brilliant underground producer. And a founding father of the brand-spanking-new Fool’s Gold label.

Bashment – cheesy, fun loving and tropical. Those a little wary ought to check out Detboi.

Turbo Recordings – when electro met techno. 2008 saw some huge releases from this Canadian label.

Bad year for…

Nu Rave – like yoyos and pogz… that was a short lived craze.

Grooverider – banged up for a mere 2 grams of weed

Ed Banger – our sudden dislike for the Parisian crew could be dismissed as hipster backlash… but who are we kidding, we love all that scenester snobbery….

Distortion – 2006/7 were filled with big fuzzy, crashing noise. This year we turned to wobbly bass

Kissy Sell Out - after a brilliant 2007, he sold out (in keeping with his name) to radio1 and his anticipated live performances were a disappointment

Brit festivals – packing the sun cream was a touch optimistic…

Indie rock – good indie bands are but a distant memory, bar a couple of indie-electro crossovers: Late of The Pier, Foals, Friendly Fires…

The End & Turnmills – R.I.P.

MSTRKRFT – cast your mind back to 2007 and you’ll remember a time dominated by brilliant MSTRKRFT remixes. They’re long gone. And as for B.O.U.N.C.E… well, at least A-trak managed to save that one.

Club Volume – all clubs were ordered to hush up. Volume was turned down nationwide to save us from Tinnitus. Damn you, you responsible, sensible government folk…

Annie Mac - us trendy bloggers and DJ’s hate it when people come along and commercialise our much loved underground scene. So maybe it’s unfair to slate her. But… drum’n’ bass at the end of an electro set? That’s pure populist bullshit.

Trance – because every year’s a bad year for trance

A side note:

Alot has changed on You Can Call Me Pelski. The year began with Pelski wantonly plundering tunes from other blogs, thoughtlessly posting tunes by big names, or tunes soon due for release. Pelski hastily diregarded the ramifications and unscrupulousness of this blogging.

Despite this…slowly but surely YCCMPelski worked up a considerable following: before long being personally sent tunes. I now receiving a vast number of tracks, mixes and remixes on a daily basis (many of which I simply cannot post due to sheer volume and time restraints). I also learnt the rules of the game – this time last year I’d have seen no shame in posting a Justice or Digitalism track.

These days I try to gain express permission, make sure the tunes is a remix or mash-up, or has been cleared for blog posting. There is a fine line between blogs aiding and stealing from music artists. I now predominantly post tunes emailed to me; tunes I’ve directly requested from the artist; tunes from up-and-coming producers wanting to get their names out there. A number of promotional boutiques and record labels email me new material – sometimes at high quality, others at low quality – by request of the label or artist. If your looking for a touch of Tiga, or the new Chemical Brothers’ banger, don’t go looking round Pelski’s block. This blog tries to maintain a greater respect for the artist.

But if you see a tune on here I have not asked you for, please contact me via my email and it will be removed sharpish.

Many thanks to all those who have sent me material and sincere apologies for not posting your music or not replying.

yours bangingly, Pelski x

“Ed Banger – our sudden dislike for the Parisian crew could be dismissed as hipster backlash… but who are we kidding, we love all that scenester snobbery….”

    awwww pelski…whyyagottabethatway!

P.S. Can we start a sweepstakes by which we choose a date when you declare yourself “sick of bass” and that it is now “all about the mid-range”. I choose 4 months 28 days and 10 hours from now.

I jest. YCCMP has been fantastic this year. don’t know what I do without it.

“Decoy” and “Dance In The Dark” are also much better than “Raven”. Good call.

we cant be stopped was one of my biggest tunes of the summer for sure, the yank is incredible and i hope he blows up

  • Anonymous

I can’t believe the Crookers remix of Kid Cudi didn’t make it onto your overplayed list.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/02395688510293276942 T @ The Popping Crease

Thanks for all you’ve done – love the blog! It’s at the top of my Music blog favourites folders! The Yank song is a tune – i think you posted it a few months back.

To the anonymous – surely that song hasn’t been around long enough?? – but i agree; what’s so great about it?

cudi/crookers gets rinsed every night in ‘normal person’ clubs in the uk now, a sure sign something is overplayed. crossed over massively to the bassline crowds in malia this year.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/07864243408052695221 rob

This is a great post. So true, I agree Kid Cudi RMX should be on overplayed and Pelski can be on the good year list though. But a great read

thank you for this post. At least the only interesting thing I read at University today ;)

Totally agree with you. Especially with your comment to Trance. Wonder why there are still tracks released in this genre

  • http://www.iheartpluto.blogspot.com/ Nils

great post. can’t wait for part II.

(I support what you said in the side note)

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/11429143297044628072 Mick Matias

Great post. I reckon Mobin Masters – Show me love would have to be on the overplayed list too!

  • Filthy

I clearly haven’t got out enough as I can still listen to Mars and Love to Edit :(

  • http://fstln.blogspot.com/ Saint Malo

I would have also said it’s been a good year for Louis La Roche, a year ago he was totally unknown

    GOOD BLOG

  • http://goingotherplaces.com/ Rasmus

    Nice post!

The point about blogs promoting/stealing from artists is really interesting, and I fully respect your decision about not just posting any mp3 you can get your hands on. But at the same time you can’t just bash every new blog around for trying to get some exposure.

I’ve been running a blog for some time now and it’s almost impossible to get some exposure if you’re not up to the latest trends and freshest tracks. Asking for permission to blog some of the bigger tracks when you’re a new blogger is a bit of a joke, since you don’t really have any authority behind your name yet.

I would love to clear every single track etc. but right now it’s not a possibility. Hopefully it will be in the future!

“Trance – because every year’s a bad year for trance”

    I love you.

Great post and very enjoyable. YCCMP is my favourite blog and it’s great to have found a blogger who shares the same taste in music as myself.

Keep up the great work in 2009.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/11147120996040661784 Larvi

Hey man I really share your opinions on most of the stuff you said. Even though I sometimes feel that you focus a tad too much on “bass only” tunes you are very much on point with your arguments on Ed Banger (Ed Rec 3 was a major disappointment), overused tracks, MSTRKRFT (one trick ponies if you ask me, every remix sounds exactly the same) and many other things.

Keep up the awesome work :)

  • jade@onemoredisco

i got usunburn for not packing suncream at a Brit Festival, you’re a liar, you !

  • http://therecommender.net/ THE RECOMMENDER

Sometimes you comments board is as good as the post itself! ha ha – especially loved Jade@onemoredisco’s comment – brilliant.

I also totally share Larvi’s sentiment about you being a little bit too bass and fidget-heavy sometimes – considering you weren’t much of a fan to start with.I remember when you changed your mind on it. Not so sure the scene is the best thing ever though.

Also agree lots with Rasmus. Smaller or newer blogs would struggle to get noticed if they tried to post only about mp3′s they were sent. Saying that, i find most new artists and DJ’s tend to respond well if you simply ask them for their music. Especially if your blog is well written and promises to promote them.

Anyways, loved this post Pelsk. Keep in touch…

u forgot; a great year for THE BLOODY BEETROOTS

    love

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/08260174286758556892 Prolifik

Great post mate. Just one thing punched me in the face…

I always thought Sebastian’s track Motor wasn’t actually a sample from an engine.. but instead a drum sample that was repeated very very quickly?

  • Anonymous

Kissy Sell Out selling out to radio1? surely it’s any dj’s dream to have a show on radio 1? being paid to play the music you love and introduce new artists to your listeners? tis pretty much what you’re doing but in writing form. if he had sold out he’d be playing the kinda stuff that you post on your blog. which he doesn’t. i’d say you’ve sold out to the blogosphere. most of the tracks you post here aren’t even new.

and someone already pointed out you missed off one of the biggest rising stars – louis la roche? at the age of 17/18? get up to date.

    wanna describe anymore “throbbing basslines”?

  • Anonymous

    such an awesome post.
best blog for COMPLETE posts like this.

2008 was also a good year for Pelski!!

I love your blog and I always keep up… but one thing…

I fucking LOVED Bounce’s original mix and I don’t care who knows it!

“The Black Ghosts – Let’s Get Physicial” was featured on a cover album compilation of “Olivia Newton John – Let’s Get Physicial” by Wesc.
There are pretty good covers, the Cat5 one’s is my favorite.

  • http://www.myspace.com/71176818 ROCKSTEADY

hahaha this post made me laugh a lot
the “playing a drum n bass track at the end of an electro set, pure populist bullshit” classic. and agreed!!!!!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/12324569641084174707 scattermish

took me a while to get around to reading this one, but good post man!

  • http://road-2-nowhere.com/ Marilyn

    Agreed on Yank!

Day ‘N’ Night is overplayed, but it’s still a killer track. The masses didn’t wreck The Beatles, nor can they wreck The Crookers.

“Because every year’s a bad year for trance” is probably the best line in all 2008 roundups.

    Unfair Annie Mac bashing!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/12587233478249385472 Petit Flo

I got FROWNED at for requesting Decoy over Raven (ORIGINAL Vers). I’m glad others agree with me.

  • Anonymous

    Yo to the funking you.
Yeah, so I appreciate your sum up, now that I finally read it, but, don’t be bashing Kissy. Selling out is living the dream, with more money. Fuck it, you can just go anonymous if you get tarred too much by a shitty genre that you’re affiliated with. Plus, he still knows how to own a room. Saw him at Digital in Brighton on NYE and he was dominant.
I’m gutted about Raven being as overplayed as it was. Fucking LOVED that, initially.

  • Anonymous

We all love kissy really, he can take some playful critisism!
