After travelling 2500 miles by train, three muggings (and, subsequently, a continual nervy paranoia and general distrust of everyone – a little old grandma is potentially an undercover mugger), very little sleep, alot of sightseeing, a diet consisting purely of salami and cheese, reading a battered mixmag from cover to back and then from back to cover and finally a desperate (and unsuccessful) attempt at a tan, Pelski is now back and has many new posts coming your way.
Fist up: Rico Tubbs – who’s been producing electronic music since 1994 and has ever since dominated the Finnish scene. He co-founded Finland’s first breakbeat label Pyssy and the hip-hop/electro outfit Skillsters, producing the first ever Finnish hip-hop album. He’s particularly famous for innovative scratching during DJ sets and breakbeat hooks, but he’s now moved closer to the newly emerging wonk and fidget genres, while also lending his hand to a couple of mash-ups and bootlegs.
I have decided not to post a picture of him, as I feel it may strip this blog of any remaining integrity (let’s just say he’s white with dreads…alongside many other equally tragic fashion statements). He lives in Finland – maybe that’s trendy out there – perhaps electro scenesters in Finland just look like twats in a different way to how you and I manage to look like ridiculous hipster twats. Either way, Rico Tubbs is producing some banging dancefloor stormers. His tracks incorporate hip-hop samples, fidgety wobbling basslines, bmore, ghetto tech and lots of heavy bass. He sounds similar in style to the remixes Crookers, Switch and Jack Beats are producing, with a wobbly, warbling bassline that shakes all over the place alongside crunky drum patterns. His heaviest tunes is the bouncy, wonky ‘Gangsters’. This edit was released by Tubbs to Discobelle and its his best yet. The original version is due for release in a couple of days:
Rico Tubbs – Gangsters [pelski highly recommends]
Here Tubbs gives The Loose Cannons’ ‘Raw’ a fidgety lick of paint and some clappy crunk. (You may be interested to compare it to Kissy’s remix of Raw, an equally hefty dancefloor remix: The Loose Cannons – Raw (Kissy Sell Out Mix) )
Rico Tubbs – I Like It Raw [pelski highly recommends]
A baltimore mash up of ‘Dominator’:
The slow-paced, but booming ‘Flashlighter’ contains a nice and hefty reverberating bassline:
And the next two switch between cheesy vocals and rasping, squelching basslines:
Minuit – A Room Full Of Cute (Rico Tubbs Remix)
Jay Stewart – Don’t Do It (Rico Tubbs Remix)
If your looking to see one of his epic DJ sets in the UK you’ll have to head over to Glade festival. Rico Tubbs’ album is caller…er…”Knuckle Sandwich”and is released this month on Menu Records:
