David E. Sugar

David E. Sugar is currently on a Kitsune tour and hanging with the pioneers of indie-electro. He’s come a long way since he started way back in 2004, with little more than an 8-bit Gameboy as an instrument. He started out by using tracker software on a Gameboy to create sequences that he then layered over with other instruments. Sounds stupid and gimmicky? But David E. Sugar is innovative, weird and a true pioneer. His early 8-bit sound wasn’t the annoying Mario-esque themetune expected.

He’s now successfully continueing the trend of the summer – mixing electro and indie vocals with great effect. He’s possesses a distinctive, lyrical voice and some great remixing skills. Indie vocals alongside dirty blasts of bass, dubstep type warrrppppps and filthy distortion make for an engaging concuction.
His greatest and most underrated track is ‘Still Like Your Clothes’. Starting with growling riffs and heavy bass guitars, it rolls into a bizarrely lyrical track. However, throughout remains a guttural thumping of bass and synths:

(See a couple of posts below for the top 25 of 2007 where the original Big Face track is posted). David E Sugar draws the track out, looping that great chorus and adding a retro instrumental backing to the lyrics. Sweet:

Sugar is massively inventive. He seemlessly blends genres, sounds, methods and lyrics in to wonderfully weird tunes. ‘Oi New York This Is London’ remains a centrepiece for his eclectic laptop sets:

‘To Yourself’ is another awesome track from David E Sugar that’s both catchy and thumping. His most recent release is ‘Chelsea Girls’, a simple poppy-electro tune. He’s also laid his hands on the uber-indie side of things, remixing the chirpy Rumble Strips, Klaxons and an infectious Grand Prix ’86 tune. Be warned, for those who hate all things fluffy and indie – you may wanna give these ones a miss:

(Admittedly, I don’t feel the Golden Skans remix is great, however i’ve given it to u to make the whole set complete, and you can make ur own mind up…)
