An Interview with Jesse Rose

Rumour has it that the Thekla Club in Bristol will be sunk tonight! We have received this information from a reliable source, with reports stating that the movements of particular house heavy weight generals in the area are deemed to be suspicious. I am therefore warning the sea sworthy passengers of the Thekla, to expect a succession of torpedo attacks from the various leading honchos at the Made To Play high command. Label mates Jesse Rose, Riva Starr and Idiotproof will be laying all hands on decks by the waterfront tonight, where they’ll be taking the passengers of the Thekla on a chartered tour of 5 years of Made To Play anthems. Pack your life savers and arm bands for the occasion.

I can also assure you that a similar mission objective will be brought to the gates of Counter Culture tomorrow night! Where Round 2 of Pelski vs Jackmode will be kicking off for a long haul of all night dancefloor antics, with Jesse Rose, Zombie Disco Squad, Oliver $ and Jet Project providing the beats.

So amidst what is clearly a very heavy touring schedule, with Mr. Rose off to Berlin after this weekend to play the Panorama Bar. We were lucky enough to catch up with him mid gin and tonic on the jet stream for a little Q & A. Here’s what he had to say…

I heard Jamie Anderson first got you into producing? Can you tell us a little about this?

He’s been my best mate since i was like 2 years old. He’s older than me, so yeah he was already on it and showed me a few tricks.

Once upon a time, Front Room Recodings was your main label and Made To Play was a vinyl-only off-shoot. Now of course Made To Play is your main focus and Play It Down is the new, smaller project. What are your hopes for Play It Down?

To keep it deep & underground, and basically Play It Down.

You’ve been making music for a very long time. In your mind, was there ever a definitive turning point? A point where you could say ‘I’ve made it’ ?

I’m still working on it!

In what ways, if any, has moving to the techno capital of the world influenced your music?

It made me wanna make deeper tracks but has now made me want to go to other cites and be inspired by everything non house / techno, berlin is pretty one dimensional.

One of our favourite recent signings of yours is Round Table Knights. Their productions and mixes are so original and fun, and their set last month at Counter Culture in the Pelski Room was a 2010 highlight for me. What got you onto RTK and do you foresee big things?

I only ask one artist a year to do an artist album, and I knew as soon as i signed them these were the ones for 2011. If they’re not massive in 2011 something is wrong in dance music, they are amazing dj’s, great producers and lovely doods to boot.

Any exciting projects coming up in the near future?

Too many to mention but a move in the winter months to L.A should bring a lot of fruit to the table.

What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?

MY TOP 5 FOR 2010!!!!!!

1. Gil-Scott Heron – New York is Killing Me (Jamie XX DUB) – XL
2. Round Table Knights – Calypso – Made to Play
3. Justin Martin – Mr. Spock – Dirtybird
4. Teed – Gadren (Jesse Rose Remix) – Play it Down
5. Chris Carrier – Cabaret Des Belles Lettres – Robsoul

Thanks for your time. We’re very much looking forward to your set on Saturday 18th December at Counter Culture.

Cheers, Jesse.
