Soulful steppin’

It’s been a while since any dubstep/2-step/funky sounds have made their way onto Pelski. So here’s a mega-post of blog cleared freebies, and, as usual, some are older, some brand spankers..:
As with any new en vogue sound that captures the hearts of the underground scene, thousands of imitators are spawned: some good; some poor and the rest just boring. The bastard son of J Dilla, Burial and Theo Parrish is the sound of Joy Orbison: a soulful 2-step/garage hybrid that’s given birth to a new music fad. George Fitzgerald is an excellent producer who’s doing the Joy sound just right. And then there’s Lokiboi, here taking the diva-vocal sample premise into new, shriller territories (cheers to our Russian friend over at Wickedbass):
Lokiboi – Your Summer [pelski highly recommends]
An older one here from Scuba’s recent album Triangulation that bridged techno, dubstep and 2-step. ‘Before’ is a highlight of the album and has been kindly thrown out for free by Scuba as a 320. A chuggy slice of hollowed out 2-step with plenty of soul:
Scuba – Before [pelski highly recommends] [buy]
Breakage’s fast-paced tribal 2-step remix of Plan B bristles with energy, and the vocals are mighty catchy… but beware, its not long before this hook-laden remix is inevitably overplayed:

Plan B – Prayin’ (Breakage Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

Some carnival beats here from the up-and-coming xxxy. Crazy burst of vocals, funky percussive flurries and brisk trumpets will put a smile on your face and a swing in your step:
Skull Disco’s Shackleton put together this 8 minute remix of To Rococo Rot, revolving around a choppy rhythm and a deep, surging bass melody. Thanks go to xlr8r for this one:

To Rococo Rot – Fridays (Shackleton’s West Green Rd Remix)

Hackman provides a thrumming clank of funky drums to the indie croon of Lemonade:

Lemonade – Lifted (Hackman Remix)

Remember Pirate Soundsystem? I posted some of their trademark 4X4 bassline a couple of years back. Well they’re back and although the Girl Unit remix is brilliant, the best take on the track isn’t on the remix package. My Panda Shall Fly’s medley of snapping snares and light high hats back the sliced n’ diced vocal sample. Thanks go to the Pipedown crew:

Pirate Soundsystem – Dub n U (My Panda Shall Fly Dub)

A forceful, punchy remix hammers away with some snares and a bubbly garage synth:

Supra 1 – Still Believe feat. Amy Douglas (Brackles Remix)

Wonky subaquatic blips and bleeps, alike to Mount Kimbie via Rustie. Nothing beats Gold Panda’ ‘You’ though:

Gold Panda – Peaky Caps

Kingdom brings his (un)usual sound: ominous, brooding and funky light-footed percussion:

No Lay / Silkie – Unorthadox Daughter (Kingdom Refix)

UK Funky remix of a recent Ninja Tune release:

Bonobo – Eyesdown (Warrior One Remix)

Crazy Cousinz’ remix of Kyla’s ‘Do You Mind?’ supplied (most of) us with our first UK funky anthem. Here’s a new Roska remix that’s equally guilty-pleasure-worthy, if not quite as suited to a high-speed dancefloor:
