Pianos, Soul and the Deep

Here’s a selection of my favourite recent house tracks that could tentatively be called deep house. Each are worthy contenders for tracks of the year (except for ‘Who To Call’, which dropped at the tail-end of 2009). Yes, your right, the sad keyboard-bound life of the mp3 blogger is exactly as you imagined: we have nothing better to do than compile 2010 best-of lists… a whole eight months in advance…

Soulphiction, AKA Michael Baumann the boss of Philpot, has fast become my favourite deep house producer. And it was his ‘Who To Call’ EP that cemented it (although he’s been producing superb house music for over a decade): the title track works a simple piano melody set against a criminally soulful vocal hook. Everything about this production is tidy, from the gentle hi-hats, to the neatly cut vocal snippet or interplay between a thumping kick and 808 claps. The flip, ‘A Short History Of…’, is a more groove-laden affair; grab the whole thing from Boomkat. What makes the tracks even more impressive is that they were both recorded live. Deliciously and insatiably soulful, I can’t recommend this enough:

Hot on the heels of Kink‘s clunky tribal number ‘Don’t Hold Back’, the recent ‘Bitter Sweet’ goes deeper with a soulful vocal hook and some old school charm. Shimmering melodies are offset by the light crash of Chicago house snares and daubed pads. The result is beautiful. ‘Bitter Sweet’ was dropped on the new blog of blogging royalty Brandon Sek ‘HappyPlease‘ (RIP Curb Crawlers – the day you folded a little bit of Pelski died). It’s also worth checking out Kink’s recent remix of Matthias Meyer:

Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, a Montreal-based artist, weaves a procession of tumbling, soft percussion around a gospel-soul vocal line and woozy piano keys. Buy the three track EP here.
