Budding it in ’97

Back in 1997 DJ Sneak simply couldn’t nail the sample on his latest tracks – the loop wasn’t working; it sounded awkward and jarring. So he reached for his trusty bag of weed and, supposedly, instantly smoothed the track out. Hence the name ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud’.

Weed-related trivia aside, this is a seminal piece of percussive house. Amidst a 90s house revival, I thought it only fitting to post this original, which will also be seeing a re-released later
this year with a whole host of remixes. This is classic Chicago House from the big man himself – Sneak wields a deep but rough drum loop and samples Teddy Pendergrass ‘You Can’t Hide From Yourself’. This encapsulates the essence of great house music, proving house is at its best when stripped to its bare bones.

Serbian producer Gramophonedzie (who gave us Why Don’t You) jacks up the bassline, whilst subtly slicing and dicing the momentum of the track. A boisterous, yet funkier take on the classic:

DJ Sneak – You Can’t Hide From Your Bud (Gramophonedzie Nu Skool Remix)
DJ Sneak has returned the favour, and turned in the best remix on Gramophendzie’s ‘Why Don’t You’ remix package (other cuts come from Greenmoney, Trevor Loveys and Bingo Players).

A favourite remix of mine from last year was Dj Sneak’s re-rub of the tribal-flecked and suitably kooky deep houser from Min & Patrick Kunkel, ‘Frauen & Blumen’. DJ Sneak adds a rhythmic, hollow tribal beat to the warbling Michael Jackson-esque vocal sample. Buy the whole thing from Juno:
