As Pelski delves a little deeper into the techno vaults, I thought I’d ease the Pelski regulars in with some new house-tinged numbers that skirt around the edges of the techno sound: not too inaccessible and from some exciting artists crossing over into all sorts of genres.
I don’t know why it is that I’m turning to the minimal, tech-house side of things right now: maybe it’s because I’m maturing, maybe it’s because I’m bored of the ‘maximal’ ear-drum assault that is electro, or maybe it’s because I’m merely conforming to the current scenester trend… Whatever the reason, I won’t be abandoning those dirty bangers, but I’ll be posting more mature minimal beats from time to time (or those I feel that I can – techno labels aren’t quite as blog-friendly as the kindly electro-house labels and promotional boutiques).
Jesse Rose’s taken a while to knock up his long-awaited album, but it’s by far the best of the
year so far. I suggest you go buy ‘What You Do If You Don’t’ now – filled to the brim with delicious piano riffs and jazzy house. Highlights include ‘Well Now’ (revolving around a captivating bluegrass vocal sample), ‘Night At The Dogs’ (an uplifting, trumpeting Mr Scruff sampler) and ‘Miss Taker’ (David E. Sugar’s indie vocals fit brilliantly with the minimal house bounce). Oh, and Mr Rose has only gone and got Hot Chip to feature too. Every tune lodges itself firmly in the head. Superb stuff.
His awesome remix of ‘Move’ brings some squelchy thuds and some charming stuttery bounce to Magic Johnson’s original:
Riva Starr moulds a simple, distinctive techno melody out of house maestro Laidback Luke’s ‘Generation Noize‘. Brilliant:

Two week ago I came across Riva Starr’s remix of The Doors’ classic ‘The End’ on his Sound
Cloud account. But Rhino Entertainment, who hold the rights to all of The Doors’ material, swiftly wrote to Riva Starr informing him he was not allowed to release it (read the letter here) Exactly why, I’m not sure – there’ve been plenty of dance remixes of this very tune – by the likes of Dirty South, Mic Newman and Tocadisco – all inferior to this beautiful slow-building re-edit. I’m afraid, Rhino, it’s out now and it’s only going to spread. It’s already receiving play time from the likes of Jesse Rose and Laurent Garnier:
