Destroying Disco…

Destroy Disco are a trio from Sydney whose skills primarily lay in DJing … until (less than) a year ago they decided to try their hands at a little producing. Well, it’s lucky they did. By now you’ll have heard the huge summer boomer ‘Fly Or Bounce’. With their old school beats, house-rave vibes and mammoth fidget basslines; Destroy Disco’s productions have rapidly garnered a quality reputation.

Destroy Disco are yet another in a long line of excellent talents to pour out of Australia: The Presets, Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernuaghts, Sneaky Soundsystem, Muscles, Van She Tech. All these bands have crafted a similar style to oneanother, and a sound so instantly recongnisable that ‘Australian’ may too start being used as a genre label (of course only by pretentious people such as myself). French house? Parisian electro, anyone? The Aussy sound is all retro synths and 80′s throw-backs. Ambient, melodic, often vocal-based and still banging.

But Destroy Disco are not in this mould. You won’t hear any of that blindingly colourful electro-pop here. No, their sound is a more progressive one and takes in elements of hip hop, house, trance, bmore, old school rave and modern electro. Destroy Disco sound refreshingly different from the majority of electro churned out down under. If they were to slot neatly into any particular ‘scene’, they would perhaps sound most at home in the UK electro and fidget scenes.

I picked up ‘Roll On By’ from the brilliant Electric Zoo. This is a techy beast, hammering out a giant thrumming bassline, that crackles and thuds along with tremendous force. This momentous boomer feels weighty and epic. A slight tech-house vibe with added electro beef. Boom:

‘But I Aint’ (featured on the Game Over blog) is a bouncy amalgam of bmore and fidget house. A crossover we’ve seen alot of lately. These days those clappy bmore drums seem to go hand-in-hand with wonky basslines. This tune displays just how unashamedly fun both bmore and fidget can be. Bounce to it:

Yup, ‘Fly Or Bounce’ has received it’s fair share of play time: heard on every mix from here to Baltimore. But there’s plenty of remixes to keep us occupied. I have not posted the Laidback Luke version, purely because it lacks little difference from the original, while I’m still searching for the excellent rogerseventytwo remix (anyone?). The original is one half old-school rave, one half fidget – seemlessly melded into a womping banger. Bart Bmore typically chops the track up into a more stuttery affair. Jokers Of The Scene – a group who originally gained my affections purely down to their great name – bang out a whirring, throbbing remix. But the full set here:

Female vocal snippets croon thoughout this soulful house tune – cheesy, glitched and infectious:

Destroy Disco – Hello

Their remix of Dub Deluxe provides a clappy beat and jazzy kick-drums – pleasant listening. Rocky hip-hoppers N*E*R*D are injected with some clattering bmore beats, pulsing bass and a fiddled acapella. For those who can’t get enough of that bmore bounce right now, lap this remix up.

N*E*R*D – Anti Matter (Destroy Disco Edit)

Last year I had a real affection for the indie-electro melodies of The Ghost Frequency. Their enchanting blend of indie, electro, rock and some catchy lyrics made these one of the few genuinely respectable Klaxons’ imitators. The original ‘Never Before’ is not one of their best, but Destroy Disco flip it upside down – into a warping, womping banger. A bit like Jack Beats’ remix of DIOYY’s ‘Epic Last Song’, switching between crooning lyrics and thudding basslines – it shouldn’t really work, but kind of does:

The Ghost Frequency – Never Before (Destroy Disco Remix)

Their recent remix of Kylie incorporate a bit of garage and alot of fidgety bass. It’s great fun. And ‘Everytime’ sounds reminsicent of old school rave. The unique, bass-heavy remix of Klaxons featured on this blog almost half a year ago now:

Kylie – 2 Hearts (Destroy Disco Remix)

Saad Hafiz – Everytime (Destroy Disco Remix)

Klaxons – Atlantis To Interzone (Destroy Disco Remix)
