Pelski’s ‘Current Favourite Artist ‘ poll results

A couple of weeks ago I asked ‘Who Is Your favourite artist right now?’

With 849 votes cast… Crookers is the winner with 375 votes – 44%.

Crookers
375 (44%)
Fake Blood
196 (23%)
Proxy
144 (16%)
Foamo
73 (8%)
Jack Beats
35 (4%)
Rico Tubbs
26 (3%)

Of these five electro names, my personal top two would be Jack Beats and Proxy. They are both two innovative up-and-comers producing some truly fresh sounds.

Jack Beats’ style of ‘fidget’ seems to be an alltogether dirtier and louder form than some of the more subdued wonky tunes that Switch, Sinden, Herve & co are banging out on a daily basis. Jack Beats’ remixes posses squelching, filthy basslines that wobble all over; begging to be boomed out of stack-speakers and shake the dancefloor to pieces.

Proxy isn’t such a newcomer, but has only really developed a fan base this year. With four huge dancefloor destroyers released already: Decoy, Dance In The Dark, 40 Seconds and Raven. His remix efforts of Chromeo and Moby, too, have been esteemed, while his live sets are unparalleled. A strangely grimey feel echoes amid the grinding beats, beefy basslines and clanging drum patterns. A both menacing and gritty edge give Proxy’s tunes a roaring, epic feel. It’s like when you first heard ‘Waters Of Nazareth’. Well…almost.

But Crookers won, and I see everyone seems to lap up every Crookers release (of which there are billions, mostly found on this blog). Their tracks are becoming increasingly turgid and samey. Some of their productions feel rushed, resulting in tunes that just aren’t that good. However there’s no denying Crookers have some real classics under their belt: Love To Edit, Big Money Comin, Secoussse, Day ‘n’ Night… And I’m sure there’s plenty more to come.

Fake Blood came in second – lagging by a country mile – but is probably the most consistent of all six of these artists. ‘Mars’ and ‘Theme Tune’ are huge bangers seeing alot of attention from any DJ who’s anyone. While his remixes may be samey, there’s no denying they kill all on the dancefloor, with that thrumming beast of an all-reverberating bassline. Boom.

But yes, all six artists produce tracks that start to sound monotonous (Crookers rinse the same wobbly bassline; Proxy with his heavy distortion; etc; etc) . So perhaps it was foolish to leave out Boy 8-Bit, who’s productions never overlap; never re-use the same sound – always inventive. His remixes of Burial, Touche, Black Ghosts, South Rakkas are all top notch, while his original material is flawless. His most recent tune – ‘The Cricket Scores’ – is a must. Addictive listening.

[The next poll is now up and please take part by selecting your favourite summer festival - the poll is at the top right hand corner of the page. Thanks.]

i agree with you about jack beats and proxy, some seriously good stuff there. I think the reason crookers won by so much is that they have mass appeal, for example a friend on mine went to malia recently and said the biggest tune in the clubs was their mix of day’n'night, this is not a bad thing, their remixes are popular for the reason that they are good, but the sounds, like you say are becoming similiar and people like jack beats and boy 8-bit offer a bit more in depth in their repertoire.

what happened to reading&leeds on your festivals poll?

Copper, i coulnt agree with u more, Crookers are definitely gaining mass appeal – and deservedly so – but also cos the remixes are somewhat more accessible than say Proxy or jack Beats.

And what happened to Reading and Leeds? They’re great festivals – ive been to Reading twice myself. But i only posted the dance music festivals (i know there are a few indie-electro acts who played, but not on the scale of Glastonbury or Bestival who have almost as many electronic artists as they do other genres).

hows about Rockness festival then? Thats a dance festival- albeit it’s not quite in same league as some of those you’ve listed.

Tbh stereoheroes are fucking hott for me at the moment but I voted crookers ’cause why they are not THE most original band, they can have this magical fairy leprachaun touch that makes things sound good…… like their salmon dance remix — all the fashonista art prick bum herve and anything he does but FUCK THAT SHIT herve is good but his salmon dance remix DOES NOT COMPARE to crookers’ remix. YA KNO? its just a case of one being better. anyway stereoheroes are fucking awesome, hit me up on msn if you need some or just be antisocial prick and get it of elbows, I don’t care but hit me up on msn anyway. Oh yeah I’m that James guy who sent you that melonpunch mix xx

Lol @ haywire being up Crookers ass
I love them too pretty much have all their remixes and stuff but I gotta agree it’s starting to sound the same and about the Salmon remix their remix couldn’t touch Hervé’s remix and never will. Right now I’m also in too the Stereoheroes they have put out 90% just straight up hot tunes it’s just a matter of time before they blow up

haywire’d, I agree Crookers are great fun, but i cannot agree that their remix is better than herve’s?!

And er.. sorry for being an ‘antisocial prick’ & not MSNing u but ive already posted alot of Stereoheroes earlier on in the year (http://ppelectro.blogspot.com/2008/02/back-to-bat-cave.html) and also they send me most of their new material. (also im unfortunately on gmail not MSN)

yeah, Stereheroes r good, tho they’re newer stuff doesn’t live up to their early stuff. It’s the age old problem of, again, becoming a little samey…

Lol @ haywire aswell!!! to actually think the crookers chemical brothers remix is better than herves requires a trip to get your ear holes cleaned out.

As for the poll…surely foamo should have topped it..while a close second would be jack beats.

Whilst im no crookers hater, I do play some of their tunes as from time to time they make a dancefloor monster…BUT…id say 70 of the stuff their knocking out now is just downright lazy..I think their caught on a hamster wheel and trying to churn out as much tunes as they can without any spark..that ep on mad decent and their last one on southern friend are audible proof of that.

agreed on the 8-Bit. while i’m not over-sold on all his productions, ‘suspense’ is a gorgeous tune; so well made and i haven’t tired of it yet. fake blood has produced the biggest banger in my eyes by far for 08 with ‘mars’, but it’s got to the stage now where i can spot one of his after 3 or 4 beats which can’t be good. and if it wasn’t for ‘love to edit’ which i almost spray my shorts over each time i hear, i’d have to say crookers are pretty much stuck in a nasty rutt.

This is funny because right now, all these artist are copying Dave Taylor. If you were to ask me, I’d say Dave Taylor aka Switch should be at the very top of this list!

  • Tony Lucas

crookers seem to make it to the top via some clever remixes for example the almost bassline remix of day n night, not to be fround upon mind you.

proxy seems to be making a stand in his own right now what with a gatecrasher appearance and also some great Djs (2many Djs to name one) dropping his great tunes.

it would be good to see some more electro chart toppers for the simple reason of having more variety in terms of clubs playing these songs. whenever i seem to go to an “electro night” at a club near me it all seems to be the cheesy dance rubbish (wileys rolex and calvin harris ft dizzee) followed by a drop of crookers and soulwax and the kids love it.

Keep up the good work pelski, we love ya !!
