A wise DJ once told me that there are certain dynamics that one should consider before recording a mixtape. “Be unique. Be yourself. Be Different,” he said. Now you may have noticed that this rather sage advice has the strong overtones of a preaching pep talk, and could have easily been sourced from a ‘Pocket Parenting’ handbook – probably titled ‘Morality & Mixing with Mum & Dad’. Yet however much I want to shun these pointers, they are to an extent true.
Your finished tape acts as a guided tour of your audible archives, forever reflecting your D.I.Y skills as the handyman behind the reigns. You may have showcased your way around the musical spectrum, genre hopping from here to there. Or maybe you laid a sound scape of highs and lows, with each blend more seamless than the other. The mix is burnt to a CD for a friend, where it remains to be your musical calling card, shelved with an endless list of other names and credentials in their collection.
I would like to say that this mix is a spiritually animated musical epiphany, but that may be deemed a little presumptuous. However, the tape does serve as a mere tribute to the artists who made my fold, and one would hope that the labels responsible for these releases receive the credit they deserve. So be sure to check out Teardrop Records, Datapunk, Traumm Recordings, Culprit and What! What! Records future releases for similar antics.
