Aera – Offseason Traveller

aera

As its title suggests, Berlin producer Ralf Schmidt concocted this record whilst spending six months travelling around the mountains of the South American Andes with his girlfriend. Twelve tracks long, it’s a sketchbook of sounds and techniques that energetically hop between house, techno, experimental dubstep and electronic psychedelia.

The tracks stumble between genres like a wide-eyed backpacker, never getting too comfortable in any area before moving on to the next. It’s hard to pick a highlight from this debut LP as the tracks play so well together, each tenderly taking over from the next in the same way the scenery changes as you gaze out of the window on a long bus ride. If I had to pick, ‘Die Pferden’ is a favourite, with its fluttering wooden flutes and bendy chords.
