Big. Fat. Trouble.

The latest outing for the Pelski-sponsored Trouble Vision is almost upon us. It was a mere four months ago that Trouble Vision’s debut ripped up Corsica Studios, with its leading underground dance acts and refusal to be confined by genre parameters.

This time Trouble Vision have teamed up with Chew The Fat – a night that’s consistently wowed clubbers for 11 years. Reading like a who’s who of the UK dance scene, the line-up’s a highlight of the Christmas break and certainly Trouble Vision’s best yet.

Topping the bill in Room 1 we have Herve – Joshua Harvey, a man who’s truly blown up this year. He probably first caught your attention playing with Sinden as The Count Of Monte Cristal, or perhaps as another of his long line of production and DJ aliases (Speaker Junk, Voodoo Chilli, Action Man, Young Lovers). ‘Beeper’ was remixed by everyone from here to Baltimore. But it’s his solo sets as ‘Herve’ that really impress. His remix of Larry Tee’s ‘Licky’ had everyone going bonkers back in 2007. And over the last couple of years he’s released a vast array of material – be it wonky fidget, grinding, techy bangers or indie mash-ups. Sampling from Micky J’s ‘Thriller’, ‘Cheap Thrills’ propelled him to underground stardom this year and prompted his new record label Cheap Thrills (boasting releases from Fake Blood, Herve, Kissy Sell Out and Project Bassline).

Below is an old fave. Herve retain’s Example’s delicious sampling of Carpenter’s soulful crooning, loops the hip hop refrain and inserts some bendy fidget noise:

Example – So Many Roads (Herve Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

Gracing the decks just before Herve is his pal and posse member Trevor Loveys – each leaders of the fidget sound (both much imitated, but never bettered). Trevor Loveys is finally gaining the attention he deserves – often previously seen as the unsung hero of bouncy fidget and dirty UK electro. For a mammoth, over-indulgent post – in which Pelski declares his undying love for Trevor Loveys – see below:

Pelski’s huge Trevor Lovey’s post

Another exciting act in room 1 is Disco of Doom – a side project of Tom Real and The Rogue Element. Disco of Doom are the electro/techno incantation of this duo and are alrady generating alot of hype. They’ve produced a promo mix for Big Fat Trouble here.

Hijack’s another blog-friendly name, courting us with his chipper electro tunes and bouncy fidget for a few years now. He’s been banging out tunes thick and fast – be it jackin’ house remixes or womping original material. Here’s a tune that received alot of attention last year:

Andy George – Big Dipper (Hijack Remix)

Zomby heads the line-up in Room 2 – another newcomer generating a huge buzz over the last few months, spurred on by support from such heavyweights as Erol Alkan, Kissy Sell Out, Drop The Lime and Diplo. The rising, bleepy manicness of ‘Strange Fruit’ has been a staple of any DJ who’s anyone right now. But it’s Zomby’s old skool, vocal-house tune that’s really grabbed me. The ravey piano stabs are set alongside an echoing chorus – but Zomby re-invents house with a fusion of clattering bmore beats and old school horns. Immensely fun:

Zomby – Spliff Dubb (Pirate Soundsystem Remix)

What’s makes Boy 8-Bit so refreshing is just how much each track differs in style. You can immediately identify a Justice tune by their retro mode and slap bass backing; you can hear a Fake Blood remix from a mile off from that trademark reverberating bassline; and Crookers’ overt wobbliness is a dead give away. But with Boy 8-Bit, the only thing each track has in common is the excellent production. But Boy 8-bit’s tunes have swung from undiluted baltimore to straight-up indie-electro to womping bass-driven bangers. One of my favourite tunes of the year is the hugley simple, yet highly addictive ‘Cricket Scores’ – a deep, rasping bassline and upbeat drum pattern run throughout this chirpy slice of electro. His remix of Pomomofo, too, is superb: glitching disco vocals along to a grinding bassline and clattering drums:

Boy 8-Bit – The Cricket Scores [pelski highly recommends]

Pomomofo – Back At The Club (Boy 8-Bit Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

Other highlight include the progressive, bassy noise of Reso who combines drum’n'bass, techno, bassline and dubstep to forge some truly dark and dirty sounds. Similarly experimental stuff come from High Rankin, in Room 2 also. His filthy, fizzing distort tune ‘You Me And The Devil’ sounds like a TV’s static cranked up to full volume, shortly after the whole TV’s been battered to breaking-point. My favourites, however, are his wildly inventive remix collaborations with Mumdance. They recently gave Deadalus a drum’n'bass makeover, but their Pop Levi rework still remains top dog:

Pop Levi – Dita Dimone (Mumdance & High Rankin Remix)

High Rankin – You, Me & The Devil
