Calling in the Debt…

There are a number of artists who are worth keeping your eye on this year; among them are the likes of Jak-Z, Andy George, Trevor Loveys & Pirate Soundsystem. And Detboi is another of such promising pioneers, who first poked his head round the corner with his grinding, innovative take on Uffie.

A week ago Detboi kindly emailed me a large array of his recent backcatalog. And, most excitingly, a sneak preview of his upcoming collaboration with Foamo, an EP to be released on Herve’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ Label. Foamo’s fidgety basslines fused with Detboi’s dancehall bounce? Tasty indeed:

Detboi yall want mo EP

1. Detboi & Foamo – Girls Dem Go

2. Detboi & Foamo – Get Low

3. Detboi – Yall Want Mo

4. Detboi – Yall Want Mo (sinden remix)

Detboi is an Irish producer, but is still pursuing his full-time job as a graphic designer and tells me, interestingly, that he happens to share his office with Eddie from SymbolOne (check out SymbolOne in the latest playlist). It’s a small world.

Detboi’s sound is hard to describe, but is most alike to the Jamaican genre of dancehall (or sometimes ‘bashment’) – the dancefloor-friendly cousin to reggae, but Detboi incorporates all sorts: from clattering b-more drums to all-warping garage noise.

‘Come Rest Up’ is a booming bashment tune, with plenty of bounce and bellowing Jamaican vocal snippets, interspersed with crunky drum patterns:

Herve’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ heavily samples Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ (a 2008 trend, it seems) and made a huge splash late last year. Now Detboi cuts and glitches it all up, while infusing some crunky beats and some thumping bass. This is massive:

His recent collaboration with the big UK electro and, dare I say it, ‘fidget’ names saw two first-class productions alongside Sinden, Toddla T and Herve. His team-up with fellow dancehall don Toddla T is the most esteemed: ‘How You like’ is all womping and warping bass, and possesses an addictive round-and-round hook that fiercely drops into deep, squelching bass:

Beeper’s remix attention has been huge. There have been more remixes and re-edits of ‘Beeper’ than there have been Uffie rants on this blog, however Detboi’s Beeper remix ranks among the better ones. And the same goes for his re-touch of, er, Uffie. Two refreshingly original takes on these now overplayed tunes:

The Count & Sinden – Beeper (Detboi Beep-re-paird Remix)

Uffie – Hot Chick (Detboi’s Hot Glitch Edit)

Hijack are another up-and-coming fidget duo, wielding some buzzy basslines and bouncy momentum. Detboi’s remix is ace: filled with chirpy bmore. ‘Drop The Bass’ is another older track from Detboi, filled with jump-up-and-down bass and a more bassline-y vibe. A couple of weeks ago i posted some of Kidda’s sunny pop and hip-hoppy electro. Here Detboi renders the track ‘Smile’ almost unrecognizable, providing a banging Jamaican makeover:

Hijack- Hijackin (Detboi’s Ghettojackin Action Remix)

Detboi- Drop The Bass

Kidda – Smile (Detboi Luvs Me Remix)

Fresh from the delicious Machines Don’t Care project, Detboi’s next EP’s gonna make a splash. In a couple of weeks be sure to snap it up here… sharpish.

Oh and here’s a little speed garage remix as a bonus, that surfaced at the beginning of the year. Expect to see alot more from Jak-Z and Andy George in coming months on You Can Call Me Pelski:

Hijack is two people, and they’ve been around a while.

Not to be pedantic or anything.
