This track, from up-and-coming New Yorker Svpreme Fiend, is an outstanding piece of deep and dubby 2-step. The inevitable and hackneyed comparisons to Burial and Joy Orbison are all very well, but for me it recalls a more specific offshoot of the burgeoning ‘future garage’ canon: 2-step with a rounded, tech-dub feel. This Berlin-shaped sound often brandishes an aquatic vibe and is defined by a certain smoothness – in contrast to Burial and Joy’s skittery stepping – offset by lightly snappy snares or percussion faintly in the dubstep mould. So far champions of this sound are Sigha, Scuba and George Fitzgerald. Appleblim and Al Tourrettes’s recent collaboration on ‘Lipsmacker’ also dipped into the darker, techier territory of dubstep. Scuba’s Sub:stance mix is probably the best showcase in this brand of brooding dubstep-2step-techno that you can get your hands on – on which you’ll also hear the as of yet unreleased dark techno brooder ‘Voyeur’ by Instra:mental.
Instra:mental have put their dark, stripped back touch to the sexed up, detroit-electro sounds of Jimmy Edgar’s ‘Hot, Raw, Sex’ (taken from Jimmy Edgar’s forthcoming ‘XXX’ album on !K7 Records). Unsurprising they pull away from the original’s funk and sleaze, steering it into altogether darker, more brooding and forboding territory.
