Back in August I was sent the first Blah Blah Blah mix: a gleefully cheesy, and upbeat compilation of electro-pop from Canadian DJ and producer Sta. Now we have the next ace addition in the series, mixed by Jerry Bouthier – one half of JBAG. Here’s an intro from the Blah Blah Blah crew:
“Jerry Bouthier is a Paris-born but London-based DJ and producer. He’s resident DJ for Kitsuné parties held at both ends of the Eurostar; playing a mix of indie, electro, rock and pop, whilst avoiding the big obvious ‘mash up’ tunes so often relied on in nights of this genre and creating something decidedly more original. His sound is perfectly showcased on Kitsune’s BoomBox CD that came out last year – tracks from Rex The Dog and Headman sitting alongside Feist and The Young Punks, many remixed by Jerry himself with production partner Andrea Gorgerino, under the name JBAG.“
Indeedio. JBAG put the fun back in dance music – whacking out some excellent, unpretentious dancefloor re-edits. They always manage to inject a bit of colour and verve into their remix material. The same goes for Jerry Bouthier’s mix. We’ve got poppy singalong vocals in that positively catchy Twelves remix of The Black Kids, distorted bangers from the likes of D.I.M, Boys Noize and Streetlife DJ’s, and some of JBAG’s distortion-infused remixes (including a tantalizing sneak preview of JBAG’s weighty remix of Passions’ ‘Emergency’)… but most inspired is all the crazy bootlegging of pop acapellas and electro instumentation. And, while it’s not credited in the tracklist they sent me, I’m almost certain that criminally underrated ‘Kill Bill’ by LA Riots (heavily sampling those whirring sirens from Tarantino’s silly, silly movie) is the tune bootlegged to ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’. Pure genius. Here’s the original:
Yup, Jerry Bouthier’s playful mix harks back to the rocky-electro sounds of 2007, and serves as a welcome change from all that decrepit fidget. A colourful and undeniably fun mix:
