Fake Blood’s Got it Twisted

There’s an unending stream of electro/hip hop mash-ups flooding the scene right now. Only recently have I truly come round to the hip hop acapella/electro mash-up. They always used to seem a little tacky; a little too DIY. However, I have an undeniable desire for catchy vocal hooks. A new found willingness to embrace cheesiness. And love the bmore tendancy to loop the hell out of any catchy hook.

Instrumental electro tunes by themselves can be tiresome, while straight-up hip hop can be crammed full of lyrics you simply can’t appreciate in a club atmosphere. You want to dance, but you also want a good old sing-a-long. The solution is the hip hop bootleg.
‘Got It Twisted’ maybe getting on a little, but its hard to tire of that delicious rapping from Mobb Deep.

First up we have a remix from Player Player, who masterfully layers those classic Mobb Deep hip hop vocals (with the tempo taken down a notch here) over a reworking of Fake Blood’s ‘Mars’. Sure, you’ve certainly heard enough of the inescapable ‘Mars’ this year, but this remix is a breath of fresh air. Yes – I too take first glance at a hip hop mashup and dismiss it, presuming it just another throwaway attempt, just an acapella lazily slapped on top of the original. Not this time. If you don’t have this already, it’ll be on repeat for months:

Fake Blood -Mars (Player Player’s 95 Jump Mix) [pelski highly recommends]

Player Player is one to watch – a Londoner banging out fidget house with a slight difference. About a month ago I scooped up this tune over at the ever excellent Discodust blog, a fidget track with some subdued sythn stabs, uplifting vocals and a bouncy rhythm:

Player Player – Lonely

Now, back to the whole Mobb Deep thing. Next up, DJ Ayres has produced an inventive version, found on his brilliant CD series, ‘The Rub – The Motherfucking Remix‘. This bootleg works the famous Mob Deep vocals over the ghostbusters theme – this may sound gimmicky, childish and … well … downright silly… but it’s genius. Once you’ve heard this rework, you’ll never hear those vocals again without feeling compelled to hum the Ghostbusters theme. Just try it:

The last ‘Got It Twisted’ remix is a more low-key affair from Canadian newcomer Twitch. The rapping takes the reigns, with an almost minimal thrumming of deep bass underlaying it. A slower, bumpy rework:

(BONUS:
On the subject of Fake Blood here’s an excellent, glitchy remix of ‘Blood Splashing (Fake Blood Theme)’ by Bul!m!atron that I picked up at the robot dance music blog. Much of the bmore beat is removed and replaced by a whirring, driving bassline. Nice:

Check out BIRD PETERSON’S new remix of SHOOK. You can’t find it for download, but it’s on his myspace player. That track is a monster.
