For the 11th edition of Club Transmediale, Berlin’s quirky festival for music and related visual arts, De:Bug and zero inch are giving away the official audio compilation as a free download exclusively from zero-inch.com between January 15 and February 7, 2010.
And, yup, all the tracks come in their glorious, unmixed, 320 forms. It’s a diverse compilation – 13 tracks traversing a number of experimental and pop artists making a splash. It ranges from the moody atmospheric strings of Hildur Gudnadottir to the electronic indie-pop of Glass Candy and the more techy sensibilities of Joris Voorn and Harvard Bass. A strange mixed bag then. Here’s Pelski’s picks of the bunch:
Mount Kimbie’s ‘Maybes’ was one of last year’s classic dubstep releases (from Hotflush). It opens with a slow, understated and an ominously brooding guitar line, before dropping into blippy percussion and bass dabs. Like an indie-leaning Burial. Sublime:
Mount Kimbie – Maybes
Guido Möbius turns in an equally unique and captivating piece of music. This is essentially electronic funky, with some weird warbling grassroot vocals, mumbled with an endearing charm, fitted alongside an idly jubilent whistle and shuffling beats and claps. Hypnotic:
Scuba’s ‘Klinik’, originally released back in May, continues his quest to blur the boundaries of techno and dubstep. Crackling white noise underlays woozy synth pads, bass throbs and the eerie clanking of beats.
Scuba – Klinik
The Joris Voorn track on the compilation isn’t his best, and verges on the bland. It’s the B-side to the 2009 anthem ‘Sweep The Floor’. But it has an agreeable old school house vibe and a nice distant vocal sample that is engulfed by the slapping rhythm.
Joris Voorn – Empty Trash
