You may have noticed a name repeatedly popping up in the last few month’s much revered Pelski Charts – a distinctive surname that, pronounced incorrectly by the untrained tongue, verges dangerously close to the politically incorrect: Alex Niggemann.
Berlin’s Niggemann (originally hailing from Düsseldorf) has been putting out some superb techno and house releases on the likes of 2020 Vision, Be Chosen and Nick Curly’s very own 8bit. It was his remix of Booka Shade’s ‘Darko’ that launched Niggemann into the limelight, but for me it’s his recent releases that have really shone through.
As well as the lauded Black Rose EP, I advise you buy the more recent Makayuni EP. Here he brings the funk to tech-house. The title track is an industrial slab of tech, brushed with subtle tribal flairs. But the standout second track, ‘El Hechizo’, is a blippy piece of tech-house, with a soulful vocal snippet, cut and looped around some organic, deep percussive beats and crisp hi-hats. Deep, funky house of the highest order – buy it here.
And luckily for us Niggemann will be gracing the ones and twos in Leeds this Friday. Niggemann will be heading the bill at Cognosco in The Loft (in the heart of the city, close to Leeds Parish Church).
