Local Talk is a painfully inconsistent label, swinging fleetingly between mediocre and inventive. Thankfully this excursion falls into the latter; it comes from HNNY after all, who doesn’t seem to have put a foot wrong yet, always focusing on unusual sounds and uplifting melodies.
The young Swede pitches down – I mean, right down – a familiar female cover of ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’. The presence of the slowed-down, delay-laden vocal injects an eeriness into the rolling, chunky house instrumentation.
‘No Tears’ uses the same organic percussion but with even more heavy weight, making for a lethargic, tumbling groove.
On ‘Gymnastics’, HNNY throws all the emotive, swirling strings he’s got for a cinematic disco number that might just be the money-shot here.
