What with everyone going a bit Joy Orbison mad – next month sees ‘The Shrew’ EP add to his increasingly consistent and captivating line of productions (check it out here) – I thought I’d post a couple of surprisingly good JO rerubs.
Put aside your over-familiarity with the original Hyph Mngo and the fact that it sounds a little odd stripped of those skittering 2-step beats… try, at least… and you might just enjoy this 90s house throwback. Old Skool piano house chords jab between the familiar vocal stabs. It works incredibly well – give it a couple of chances and you’ll realise just how neatly the echoing essence of Hyph Mngo fits into the soulful piano house mould:

BRKLN CLLN was another fine release from Joy at the end of 2009, swinging much closer to a house tempo than his previous release. New York’s Micha has added some drudging bass and hollowed out the percussion. Nothing on the original, but an interesting take:
