I envisage trouble…

Far too many DJ’s fill their sets/mixes with monotonous humdrum. The greatest DJ’s tend to not only have a brilliant ear for what does and doesn’t blend together, but also a knack for dropping fresh and classic tunes alike. Erol Alkan, for instance, is now renowned for dropping a beefed up version of The Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ into his magnificent sets, alongside all those contemporary bangers. Similarly, IntoTheFray somehow manage to neatly mesh Anita Ward’s 1979 hit ‘Ring My Bell’ into their latest mix. So IntoTheFray, too, seems to have a gift for inventive mixing.
I advise you to check out their blog (though they recently received a bit of a ticking-off from the disgruntled Detboi), where you can find rare tracks seldom found on The Hype Machine.

The latest offering from the Gold brothers is IntoTheFray’s greatest yet. Known as Park Ranger and Solid Gold, they are, in fact, only two fifths of IntoTheFray, and yet have delivered a very polished production indeed. For me, it’s the choice and diversity of tunes that make this so delicious. And, baring in mind what a mixed bag this is, it all fits together suprisingly well. They chuck in a bit of everything: some wonderfully cheesy electro-house (Puzique), hip-hop, bootlegs, wonky basslines, speed garage, indie-electro, retro disco, crunky bass and ‘fidget’ house:

Here are just a few of the tracks from that eclectic mix:

Crookers – Big Money Comin [the correct version]

The inclusion of Let’s Get Physical is such a treat – an underrated track from that thoroughly indified electro-duo, The Black Ghosts. Fake Blood seems to turn everything he touches to gold these days, and its nice to see this complete reworking of UNKLE’s previously rather boring ‘Restless’. Hercules And The Love Affair offer up a camp, truly vintage sound, thats sounds right out of the 70s, and has been receiving alot of radio coverage. A1 Bassline’s remix is another sound addition to his ever-increasing list of filthy nichey remixes. Hijack seems to gets alot of attention from the Gold brothers, and is, incidentally, playing at their next Game Over night in October alongside Andy George and Foamo. Should be an outstanding night.

Pelski says download this mix now.

It’s a real bouncy, energetic listen.

See IntoTheFray rip up Britol’s ‘The Tube’ at George Powell’s O-YO Meets ‘The Tube’ on April 23. They also have a new late-night residency at Plan B, Brixton.

Watch this space -IntoTheFray are gonna blow up.

    Ring My Bell is brilliant.

Crookers – Big Money Comin’ – this isnt the track! Why is every link to this track on the web wrong?! The one on the Knobbers EP is amazing too….!

  • Anonymous

well, tom oke, let me explain to you how blogs work: one person uploads a track and incorrectly labels it & it makes its way onto hype machine, then everyone takes it and reposts it. a simple mistake.

  • Anonymous

hey enough of the negativity, this mix is sick.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Yeah, Tom is right. I’ll have a look around for the real one. Out of interest Tom, what is the name of the actual track I posted? ‘cos its a gd tune and I’d like to label it properly…

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

I’ve now uploaded the correct version at 320kbps.

    awful mix.
    good selection of track,
    bad transitions.

  • Max

The last hijack mix is the same link as the first one – Herve remix isn’t up.

    Cheers

  • Anonymous

does any one know if this mix is done on a computer or actually done on decks?

  • Anonymous

It was done on 2 CDJs and a mixer. Im not a huge fan of laptop sets…….call me old fashioned. Solid Gold

  • aaron

i’ve been playing this mix nonstop

  • Anonymous

good to hear it’s a live mix. i thought it was a (dis)ableton mix

  • Anonymous

Looks sick but dropping like 1 disco tune and a dubstep tune don’t really make for a diverse set lmao

  • Anonymous

yes it does – its a diverse set that works, anything more diverse never does

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Well, you’ve gotta have some kind of continuity in a set. And my point is that this balances continuity and diversity. Multiplicity easily results in discontinuity. This mix manages to balance them both – if they chucked in every genre it simply wouldn’t work as a whole.

  • Anonymous

1 disco tune and a dubstep tune is enough for me to get cock, that’s what i was getting at..

  • Anonymous

sorry mate, what do u mean get cock?

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

it’s obvious what’s going on here someone else is pretending to be the guy from before – who said the mix wasnt diverse…i.e. trying to make him sound gay… that can happen if u post anonymously!

  • Anonymous

    Wasteman. Shutup.

  • Anonymous

Anything more diverse never works? Are you flippin mad? Check out Diplo’s Essential Mix and then hush up.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Look, yes, of course I’ve heard diplo’s essential mix and it’s definitely not my thing. I didnt like it. As i’ve said already i like some kind of continuity in a mix: for common themes to run through it. i like this ‘cos its more diverse than alot of the humdrum out there at the mo. its diverse within it’s given genre i.e. electro.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Also Diplo’s mix was done on a laptop. its much easier to get it all to fit together nicely when u have your mouse continually hovering over the ‘sync’ button…

    Eat shit anonymous fuck-face.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04193533186694252739 George

You may find that funny ‘Anonymous’… but I don’t.

  • Anonymous

lol you are dry. Just keep giving away people’s music for free blud, I’m sure they appreciate it.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Most people DO appreciate it. Have u been living under a stone for the last two years… blogs are a form of promotion and help get the word around about small & up-and-coming artists. Alot of artists send me tracks asking for me to blog them. Many extremely talented artists such as Stereoheroes have no record deal and achieve recognition through the blog world. When i 1st blogged them they didnt have a record deal, their popularity has now spread via word-of-blog and they now have a record deal. (and they are still willing to send me tracks of theirs). The majority of these artists dont make their profit from selling singles (u dont see them in the charts), but from playing dj sets and live gigs…and how do people find out bout these new artists and their tunes…? how does the word spread…? Blogging. (And I have obliged to anyone who has asked for their tracks to be removed). Now please take ur negativity and ur immature jokes, that seem to revolve around ass fingering, somewhere else.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04193533186694252739 George

and you’re here for the reviews?

  • Anonymous

Loads of tunes on this blog are from people like Justice, Erol Alkan, Riton (this is just at a glance) at the first page.

If you only posted tracks by people who sent you tunes your blog would be empty. Let’s be honest most producers you’re blogging don’t really benefit from exposure. I came on the blog to download the set we are talking about here.

The disclaimer thing is wack as well. As if producers have time to track down every blog giving away thier tracks for free and request them to be taken down. It’s laughable.

Blogs that post tracks you can listen to are cool but ones that offer 100s of tracks for free to download at 320kbps that are commercial releases are screwing people who stump up cash for vinyl and proper mp3s as well as artists themselves. Don’t front like you’re doing something righteous. Ask Duke Dumont.

  • Aaron

why are you getting at this blog in particular? I bet all the tracks here came off Hypem.com in the first place. I use all the blogs and they all do the same as this one, except here there are comprehensive reviews and interesting writing.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

herve’s remix of hijackin has been removed at request

  • Anonymous

It’s just blogs in general. I just got some grief here and can’t be arsed to hear some blog kid chew my ear off about how he’s somehow helping the scene. It’s bollocks, posting up tunes like DVNO isn’t championing new music. It’s just giving away music for free and takes the piss out of DJs and music heads that shell out thier cash on records.

Getting the righteous bullshit from these kids just grates lol.

  • Anonymous

No you sound like the self-righteous asshole here pal. And I DJ and I for one cannot afford to buy every track I drop into my sets, so I use the blogs. And they help inform me of good new music.

  • Tom Perry

This blog is absolutely mint. Thank you.

  • Anonymous

I’m not being righteous, I’m telling you the truth.

(Apart from producers who send out their tunes) you shouldn’t be playing that shit unless you’ve paid for it. It ain’t rocket science.

If you can’t afford music get a new hobby? Or just limit your selection. I swear some of you lot are on another planet.

anonymous your sentiments are not shared by anyone else looking at youcancallmepelski, fuck off and complain to some people who care.

  • Anonymous

Not by scabby little theiving cunts naturally.

I know some people reading this have some sense and know I’m right.

  • Anonymous

OK, anonymous, OK. Take a deep breath and walk away. Please. Don’t let it get you down.

Blogs ain’t going anywhere. At least Pelski writes nicely, has good taste and is informative.

If you are sooooo worried about lining the pockets of recording companies then go shopping and leave us to discuss and share music amongst ourselves.

Justice et al aren’t going to be poor just coz Pelski listed DVNO for a few weeks now are they.

It’s not about principals. It’s about sharing. Music came first, then the business. The Internet is changing things for the industry and allowing us greater access. Music is not dying, its never been so vibrant and diverse!!

I appreciate you trying to take a different stance, but perhaps you cannot accept changes are occuring.

Why do you think that Radiohead just gave away their latest album? Not because they don’t want money. They’re changing and adapting.

Perhaps its time you did to. Otherwise, please just walk way…

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00320901160021649926 Pelski

Yes, your right i suppose – ’bout Justice. I shouldn’t have posted the original of DVNO, tho the remixes i will not apologise for; especially since LA riots gave out their original demo copy on the net anyway before it was snapped up by Ed Banger.

Remixes aren’t money-making entities. And yes we all know about Duke Dumont’s notorious opinions on sharing music.

When I started this blog, I never intended to post commercially successful original material. I admittedly – and regrettably – posted DVNO as a shameless attempt to gain more web hits (Justice are, after all, the most searched on hypem – so i knew i’d get ALOT of hits). Though i now have regular readers so don’t need to. I’m now sent quite alot of tracks (tho only a few are any gd at the mo) and often email people before posting (e.g. I emailed Pirate Soundsystem asking if i could post the Wiley remix which they said i couldn’t, but they’re happy with any other tracks).

And NO, you are on another planet if you think DJ’s pay for all their music. (Oh and EVERYONE here are huge music fans and therefore buy the CD’s they NEED in their collection.)

But thankyou the-other-anonymous (the nice one) for ur kind words bout my taste and writing.

Now, lets steer the conversation back to opinions of the mix…

  • Anonymous

the mix wasn’t that great imo. too many similar sounding weak tunes. I was waiting for something to really grab me.
