Jacques Renault – Back To You

back to you

Much has been made of Paradis’ wonderfully rich remix of ‘Back To You’ on Let’s Play House, but it would be unfair to dismiss Jacques Renault’s masterfully low-slung original.

Marrying seemingly contradictory parts, Renault has an elated disco horn rubbing shoulders with a plodding house beat. It enters with conga beats drenched in low-end, before a catchy filtered horn riff is ushered in. There’s a lethargic-come-celebratory feel to proceedings that is bound to captivate sunny terrace parties as well as early morning sets this summer.

French duo Paradis turn the original on its head, painting it in rich, intricate textures. Subtlety courses through what was previously a blunt instrument: the percussion is pulled back into short, abrupt clicks and the bass to a stunted murmur, whilst wistful vocals breathe through the mix like a billowing gust.

Perhaps the only real complaint is that the track progression is so subtle that the soundscape appears largely unchanged by the end of its lengthy nine minutes.

All said and done, it’s another solid release from Jacques Renault’s fledgling label Let’s Play House.
