Here we have a tight little mix from Mismatch – AKA Andy Toone – a new DJ who’s only just started playing live DJ sets, with little more than a pair of battered old decks, impecabble music taste and a musical ear. And he’s taken to it like a duck to water. He’s a friend of mine from Leicester, but has been DJing in Bristol, with a residency at both Oyo’s Night and Yam Yam’s. I ought to point out; I tend to only post mixes by friends, unless there are remixes or original material from sent by the artist to accompany the mix (such as the tracks & mix posted in my DTL post). So please don’t take offense when I don’t post your mixes, it’s just that my inbox is continually inundated by people submitting their sets, and it is impossible to select a small few to post.
Mismatch’s latest mix is called ‘Something’s new and something’s old’. When he says there’s ‘new and old’ here, don’t go expecting any New Order, House of Pain or even Daft Punk. No, ‘old‘ means a couple of months or even weeks old. Anything a few days old is ancient. We’re scenesters here. Fashionistas . Hipsters. Bloggers. Keep up at the back dammit. We’re trendy as hell and so quick to move on the next new thing that come tomorrow, yesterday’s banger will be obsolete. And he actually sent this mix a month ago… even by the time i’ve finished writing this the likes of Crookers and Proxy could be but a distant memory. Ah, but yes some of these tunes have been around for a little while – but not long really - and then among them there’s also the brand spankers.
The mix was recorded live at Yam Yam’s. It’s a flawless tracklist, and the mixing’s nice too. Some inventive and smooth transitions make for a well thought out set.
The mix starts with some deep house-y beats, and quickly picks up pace. He drops the Radioclit tune that’s been causing a real stir of late, and is addictive listening: with that distinctive screeching, beeping and waling layered alongside a bouncy beat. (Brodinski’s trebly and piercing remix is also worth a see-in: Radioclit – Divina Gosa (Brodinski)) . Always nice to see The Black Ghosts on display too, though I personally prefer the original and the Jack Beats remix of the excellent crooner ‘I Want Nothing’, to the Sinden one dropped here. However Sinden’s remix brandishes fuzzy, crunchy basslines that fit rather well in a mix dominated by such heavy distorted noises. It’s fitting as both Riton’s remix of Mystery Jets and Proxy’s ‘Dancing In The Dark’ are here, both wielding similarly gnarly, crunchy noises. Yes, there’s lots of dirty bangers in here. More hefty sounds from Hostage and a nasty slab of electro from the Bloody Beetroots remix ( …nasty in a good way, mind).
At one stage he mixes in a little of Metric’s masterful vocal mash-up of Splittr – and it’s great to see Mismatch cut all the surplus indie drivel at the begging of the track, and get straight to the great glitched chorus. The Deadmau5 bootleg is a warping, womping beast, while Boy 8-bit’s ‘The Supense Is Killing Me’ has a nice quirky charm to it. The mix finishes on Autkratz’ Kitsune single ‘Pardon Garcon’.
A great party mix, guaranteed to get you jumping around like a beaned moron. Yeah. Eat it:
