\\\\\\\\\\ Pangaea //////////
A fresh-faced Pangaea burst onto the dustep scene in 2008 with ‘Coil’, shortly followed by the punchy, rolling garage rhythms of ‘You & I’, both released on the now-famous Hessle Audio label – an imprint run by himself, Ramadanman and Ben UFO . It wasn’t long before Pangaea was being weighed up to the likes of El-B and Burial. ‘Bear Witness’ (Hotflush) and ‘Memories’ (Hessle Audio) earnt him further critical acclaim before 2010 saw him release his six track self-titled EP to even greater, unanimous praise. What stands out about Pangaea’s deep and often melancholic brand of dubstep/2-step is its warmth – whether it be provided by sweet melodies, shuffling percussion, bassy organs, gentle jungle nostalgia or dreamy vocals.
\\\\\\\\\\ Pariah //////////
Both The Guardian and Pitchfork have likened Pariah to a 2-step incarnation of the late great J Dilla. His debut release ‘Detroit Falls/Orpheus’ dropped on R&S at the tail-end of 2009 and signalled the emergence of a true talent: ‘Detroit Falls’ brings a delicious Rnb vocal folded wonkily into off-kilter Dilla hip-hop beats, whilst Orpheus displays a beautiful amalgam of clattering garage percussion and wistful, swirling soul. Pariah’s second release, upcoming on R&S, demonstrates the young producer’s versatility: snipped-and-clipped vocals are again featured heavily, but with more emphasis on UK Funky, deep and housey textures, lots of shimmering synths and shuffling beats as well as the odd nod to Detroit. A must have EP for 2010.
\\\\\\\\\\ SDUK & CNTRST /////////
The formidable DJ duo SDUK & CNTRST have been ripping up the London scene with their notorious mixing and selection abilities for a few years now. SDUK recently released his bassheavy ‘Clunge’ (The Inbetweeners, anyone?) on Starkey’s label and has received support from the likes of James Blake, Baobinga and Crookers. SDUK’s partner in crime CNTRST has equally impressive mixing abilites and a mighty fine ear for all things dubstep/2step, as well as a sneaky penchant for Detroit techno. And did I mention these two fellas run the much loved Pipedown blog?
\\\\\\\\\\ Rylski //////////
Rylski’s the producer, following a slew of anonymously uploaded tracks on soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/rylski), who has had the dubstep and funkysouls forums making wild guesses at his identity. He’ll be spinning the best in cutting-edge dubstep, 2-step and UK funky.
\\\\\\\\\\ Charles Darkly /////////
Providing the techno and house debauchery for the evening will of course be our resident and Pelski-cowriter, Sir Darkly. Expect anything from tribal house to the darker side of minimal techno.
