Robin has not been outdone

A couple of weeks ago I was sent this outstanding mix by Robin from OliDAB vs Robin and intothefray (check their blog here, though they’re currently on a brief hiatus) – and can often be seen ripping up the free Shoreditch clubnight, called ‘Superfilth‘, at Catch and various acclaimed nights at Corsica Studios in Elephant & Castle.
This eclectic mix is somewhat divergent from the usual stuuf found here. Getting a little bored of hearing wonky bassline after wonky bassline? Tiring of monotonous bangers that serve only to destroy the dancefloor? If you regularly read this blog…the answer is probably ‘er…not really’. No doubt you thrive on all that … so do I. But don’t worry, while Robin’s mix may be a maturer offering with all its low-key house and cerebral electro, it’s still interspersed by wobbly fidget and weighty bangers. But it’s the deep house vibe that’s gives it this satisfyingly understated feel. This is pleasant listening that you can both relax and party to.

My last post pointed out the floaty crooner of a remix ‘Built To Fail‘ (introduced to me by this mix). An uplifting, but downtempo tune that’s here mixed into a remix of that delicious slice of afro-funk fromMujava (AKA Elvis Maswanganyi), a South African newcomer. The original has garnered alot of attention from the likes of Erol and Hot Chip. Expect to hear this everywhere over the coming months. It’s nice to see Erol’s underrated psychedelia-electronica outfit Beyond The Wizard Sleeve receive a little play time: here with an ambient remix of SMD’s ‘Love’. Mowgli (as per usual) crafts the best remix of ‘I Want You’, even better than Tocadisco, Laidback Luke and TEPR’s attempts.

Si Begg’s latest outing is his most accessible yet, with his third installment of his ‘Jetlag & Tinnitus’ EPs. Robin has chosen the most experimental off the new Si Begg EP, but the track maintains a certain moving momentum; a bleepy, thumping addition to the mix. It melds well with a rocky distort banger from NYC boys Fukkk Offf (check out a pelski post on ‘em here). A quick hit of electro disco comes in the form of two producers ripping up Boys Noize records right now: Shadow Dancer and Strip Steve. And, of course, these days a DJ set isn’t a real DJ set without a little Fake Blood snuck in for good measure…so we have the superb Little Boots remix. Martin Brothers’ ‘Dum’ is an excellent piece of production that coordinates beeps, bleeps and bassy echoes with an incredible attention to detail. The penultimate tune is Chemical Brothers’ latest highly acclaimed release ‘Electronic Battle Weapon 10′. After all the hype, I was at first admittedly rather dissapointed with it whe nhearing Erol drop it at Gatecrasher SSS. But then it grew and grew on me. This, it seems, is the way of The Chemical Brothers newer stuff. He finishes up by slipping into the divine ‘Disco L’ of Lexx.

It’s a collection of gorgeous tunes that are all mixed intuitively into a melodic 1 hour 15 minute mix. If your looking for a little more than just the electrostomper, look no further than Robin:

big thanks to Paul Thompson who, after this post mysteriously disappeared/deleted itself, thoughtfully sent me the whole copy again since he had an emailed RSS version on file. Cheers man! I’ve reposted the whole thing now thanks to Paul and also put the old comments back up.
