The Yank is an unsigned artists from… yup…the US, whose tune ‘We Can’t Be Stop’d’ is absurdly addictive listening. He’s named after the patriotic superhero ‘The
Fighting Yank’: a comicbook character squarely pitched as an accessible form of propaganda during WWII (if you look back at some of the comics, a few of the covers contain illustrations of American enemies, such as the Japanese (as seen in the picture above), depicted in an unflattering and even racist way). And yes, although this is patriotic propoganda, he does have other ‘super powers’ other than just being American. Phew!
His ace tune ‘We Can’t Be Stop’d’ – first heard bootlegged to Crookers’ remix of ‘Secousse’ in Foamo’s outstanding Summer Mixtape – uses a genius instrumental sample snippet from The Beatles’ ‘Birthday’. The track starts with a slow, pumping beat and a looped vocal hook of ‘We Can’t Be Stopped’, then a twanging, whining guitar riff that eventually drops into a deep, thrumming and extremely wonky bassline. This tune is a must have:

DJ Bam Bam has produced a nice remix, infusing it with some warping bass, glitched vocals and added a couple of his own:

Here’s a strange, bassey remix of Gutterpunk containing some downbeat bounciness, all punctuated by cut-up vocals:
