Standing head and shoulders above the deluge of so-called edit maestros, Stupid Human offers a breath of fresh air to the scene. Take his cheeky ‘Swamp Funk’ from back in 2009, which fused a peculiar redneck blues sound (from Booby Rush) and slo-mo swagger, and displayed the fun, ballsier side of modern funk edits.
The latest in the series plies a similarly bottom-heavy bassline, but to an entirely different effect: sultry, late-night disco bliss. As the bottomless bass rolls over itself, a feeling of deep longing emanates from the female purr and yearning strings.
‘Not Tonight’ returns to more familiar Stupid Human territory: a down and dirty boogie-funk number complete with chugging bass beat and sleazy vocal snippets. ‘Slow Moshun’ is fitted with a scorching diva vocal and pitches things right down at 85 bpm.
With a twinkle in its eye and sensuous vocal chords, this is unapologetic romantic disco.
